WhatsApp announced this new feature on Twitter that users can now transfer their entire chat history without having to leave the app. However, there’s a limitation, you can only transfer data between phones with the same operating system, so Android to Android or iOS to iOS. If you’re switching from Android to iOS or vice versa, the Chat Transfer feature won’t work.
Before this feature, users had to create a chat backup on a cloud service and then download it on their new phone. However, the new feature has the potential to be much faster and simpler compared to the existing cloud-based option.
Using the feature is easy. First, set up a new WhatsApp account on your new phone. Then, choose the Chat Transfer option to generate a QR code. Simply scan the QR code using your old phone, and the chat data will transfer to your new phone.
According to WhatsApp about the new feature, “the data is securely encrypted during the transfer and is only shared between your two devices”.
WhatsApp’s announcement doesn’t mention a specific release date for the new feature. The feature is currently being tested by beta users and will likely be widely available in the near future. Once released, users can find it in the app’s Settings > Chats > Chat transfer.
